Favorite and Least Favorite Books of the Year Part 1

Ranking the books we've read is almost as fun as reading them, right? Shoutout to @emilyintheweb on Instagram for this idea! All covers are linked to Goodreads.

January

Favorite: The Winners, by Fredrik Backman

Rating: 5 stars

Release Year: 2022

I cried at the end. That's all you need to know.

Least Favorite: Moon of the Crusted Snow, by Waubgeshig Rice

Rating: 3 stars

Release Year: 2018

I wish there had been either more overt folklore/horror themes or none at all.

February

Favorite: Here One Moment, by Liane Moriarty

Rating: 5 stars

Release Year: 2024

This was SO good. I definitely want to read more by Liane Moriarty!

Least Favorite: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, by Maya Angelou

Rating: 4 stars

Release Year: 1969

I feel bad putting this as my least favorite book of February, but I read a lot of really good books that month, and this was the one I enjoyed the least.

March

Favorite: The Storm Keepers' Battle, by Catherine Doyle

Rating: 4 stars

Release Year: 2021

I loved this whole series! Great themes, great writing, great characters, great atmosphere, unique magic system. I'm looking forward to reading more by Catherine Doyle!

Least Favorite: Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad

Rating: 2 stars

Release Year: 1899

If there was a point to this book, I missed it because my blood was boiling at all the racism.

April

Favorite: Three Days in June, by Anne Tyler

Rating: 4.5 stars

Release Year: 2025

This was a quick, thoughtful read that I really enjoyed. The characters felt very real to me.

Least Favorite: Bad Therapy: Why the Kids Aren't Growing Up, by Abigail Shrier

Rating: 2.5 stars

Release Year: 2024

I agreed with a lot of the author's points, but the way she went about making them set my teeth on edge. I get mad whenever I think about this book.

May

Favorite: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride, by Cary Elwes

Rating: 5 stars

Release Year: 2014

This was a reread (or re-listen) for me and I loved it just as much the second time around–possibly more, since I hadn't actually watched the movie the first time I listened to the book!

Least Favorite: This is Marketing: You Can't be Seen until You Learn to See, by Seth Godin

Rating: 2.5 stars

Release Year: 2018

I read this for work. I did not enjoy it. This is a problem since marketing is literally my job. Hence why I blog about books for fun.

Have you read any of these? What did you think of them if so? I'll be back with Part Two (June-October) next week!
