Last week, I compiled a list of ten of my favorite series. This week, I'm listing six of my least favorite series, meaning that I read the first book and was never even tempted to finish the series.
Once again, these are in alphabetical order, and all covers are linked to Goodreads.
Bone Grace, by Kathryn Purdie
Bone Crier's Moon & Bone Crier's Dawn
It may have been the writing, the characters, or the plot that turned me off, but I honestly don't remember.
The Brilliant Death, by Amy Rose Capetta
The Brilliant Death & The Storm of Life
I liked the setting for this book (Italian-inspired, Medici era), but I really, really didn't like the execution.
The Diviners, by Libba Bray
The Diviners, Lair of Dreams, Before the Devil Breaks You, & The King of Crows
I enjoyed her Gemma Doyle series, but The Diviners was a little too dark for me.
The Queen's Assassin, by Melissa de la Cruz
The Queen's Assassin & The Queen's Secret
Dreadfully generic setting, childish characters, insipid plot. You can read my full review here.
The Wingfeather Saga, by Andrew Peterson
On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, North! or Be Eaten, The Monster in the Hollows, and The Warden and the Wolf King
My husband and I read this together and we s t r u g g l e d through it (as in, it took us six months to read a 290-page children's book). We didn't find the characters or the plot compelling. I know a lot of people who love this series, though.
The World of the Narrows, by Adrienne Young
Fable & Namesake
I actually look back on this read with mild fondness (pirate-y atmosphere!), but I didn't read the second book because I just wasn't that interested in what happened next.
Loved this post! I like Bone Crier Moon when I read it in 2020, but I completely forgot it existed, let alone that it has a sequel. I also loved Gemma Doyle, but The Diviners was a flop (I couldn’t stand how the characters/plots were handled and abandoned it)
ReplyDeleteThank you! Bone Crier's Moon wasn't bad, it just wasn't good enough for me to want to pick up the sequel. I agree with you on The Diviners too. Are you planning to read Libba Bray's new book, Under the Same Stars?
DeleteThis happens to me a lot, but it's usually more because I just don't remember to pick up book two in time and then I never get back to the series. It's hard to keep track of all the series I've started!
ReplyDeleteHaha I do that too! And then there are series I've been working on for years, like Naomi Novik's Temeraire series ... who knows if I'll ever finish that lol
DeleteI have not read any of these.
ReplyDeleteThat's probably not a great loss!
