Taylor Swift Book Tag: Evermore

Work has been busy this week, so I'm getting my weekly post out a day late ... but here I am!

I had so much fun doing Cielo's Folklore book tag a few weeks ago that I decided to do an Evermore tag as well! This one is by Ahaana at Windows to Worlds. I also added questions for the two bonus tracks on the deluxe edition, because I really really love "right where you left me".

I actually had to go back and listen to Evermore, because I hadn't listened to it for years and had decided I didn't like it. After getting the CD out of the library so I could listen to it in my car (I'm not actually as old as that makes me sound), and after hearing it about ten times, I can confirm that it's a pretty solid album after all. (Maybe I should give Red another chance next ...)

Questions

"willow" - a book with a character you can't help but fall in love with

"Wherever you stray / I follow"

War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy: Natasha! Enough said.

"champagne problems" - a book with a broken relationship

Britt-Marie Was Here, by Fredrik Backman: Kent and Britt-Marie's dysfunctional marriage is what kicks off the entire book (which is a follow-up to My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry), but it's not about their dysfunctional relationship; instead, it's about Britt-Marie trying to figure out who she is without Kent's suffocating influence.

"gold rush" - a book you love with all your heart

"And the coastal town / We wandered 'round had never / Seen a love as pure as it"

Howl's Moving Castle, by Diana Wynne Jones: Oh my goodness, there are so many books I love with all my heart! But I'll have to go with Howl's Moving Castle. My original pick was Ella Enchanted, just for the record.

"'tis the damn season" - a book in which the character reconnects with their family/hometown

"I parkеd my car right between the Methodist / And thе school that used to be ours"

The Vanishing Half, by Brit Bennett: I don't remember this super well, to be honest, but it was very interesting and I enjoyed it.

"tolerate it" - a book with a suffering relationship

"I know my love should be celebrated / But you tolerate it"

Jacob Have I Loved, by Katherine Paterson: I actually really disliked this book. The relationship between Louise and Caroline is, however, strained at best.

"no body, no crime" - a book about murder

"Good thing my daddy made me get a boating license when I was fifteen / And I've cleaned enough houses to know how to cover up a scene"

Murder on the Orient Express, by Agatha Christie: Agatha Christie is just about the only mystery novelist I'll read. I love all of her books that I've read, but this one truly blew my mind.

"happiness" - a book that's an old favorite, but you just can't relate to anymore

"There'll be happiness after you / But there was happiness because of you"

Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott: I talked about this in my March 12 Top Ten Tuesday post.

"dorothea" - a book featuring old (or strong) friendships

"The stars in your eyes / Shined brighter in Tupelo / And if you're ever tired of being known / For who you know / You know, you'll always know me"

Beartown, by Fredrik Backman: I have to feature Fredrik Backman again. I'm thinking of both Kevin and Benji and Ana and Maya for this one.

"coney island" - a book that made you cry // completely destroyed you

"Lost again with no surprises / Disappointments, close your eyes / And it gets colder and colder / When the sun goes down"

Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom: I don't talk about it a lot, but this might be one of my favorite books. I've read it twice, and it made me cry both times.

"ivy" - a book that was an unexpected favorite

"Oh, I can't / Stop you putting roots in my dreamland / My house of stone, your ivy grows / And now I'm covered"

Starless, by Jacqueline Carey: I was not expecting to fall in love so completely with this book when I first read it last month. It's definitely one of my very few five-star reads.

"cowboy like me" - a book about thieves, or criminals

"You're a bandit like me / Eyes full of stars / Hustling for the good life"

The Thief Lord, by Cornelia Funke: It's been soooooo long since I read this, but I remember really loving it! I'd like to revisit some of Cornelia Funke's books soon.

"long story short" - a book that made up your childhood

"Actually / I always felt I must look better in the rear view"

Mary Poppins, by P.L. Travers: My sister read all of the Mary Poppins books to me multiple times when we were younger, and to this day I maintain that the movie just isn't the same.

"marjorie" - a book with a moving message

"Never be so polite, you forget your power / Never wield such power, you forget to be polite"

Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo: This book is about a lot of things, including the Paris sewer system, but it's also about forgiveness and love and courage. It's so good that I've read it twice, even though it's 1,463 pages.

"closure" - a series in which you NEED the next book

"Yes, I got your letter / Yes, I'm doing better / I know that it's over / I don't need your closure"

The Hero of Ages, by Brandon Sanderson: Closure is, without a doubt, my least favorite song on the album. I tend to prefer standalone novels, but there have been a few series where I needed the next book; however, I already used all the ones that immediately popped into my head for the Folklore book tag! So I decided to tweak this prompt slightly to fit the lyrics better and picked a series where I didn't feel like I needed the next book, and that would definitely be the Mistborn series. I feel like it ended quite nicely after The Hero of Ages, and I might read the rest of the series someday, but for now I'm satisfied.

"evermore" - a perfect conclusion to an extremely long (but worth it) series

"And I couldn't be sure / I had a feeling so peculiar / That this pain would be for / Evermore"

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by J.K. Rowling: This seems like the obvious choice to me.

Bonus Tracks

"right where you left me" - a book with a character who's stuck in time

"I, I stayed there / Dust collected on my pinned-up hair / They expected me to find somewhere / Some perspective, but I sat and stared"

Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens: I love this song, and it always makes me think of Miss Havisham!

"it's time to go" - a book with a character going through a divorce

"That old familiar body ache / The snaps from the same little breaks in my soul / I know when it's time to go"

Becoming Duchess Goldblatt, by Anonymous: The author of this book wasn't the one in the relationship who decided to leave, but it was the only book I've read featuring a divorce that I could think of.

And there you have it! My favorite songs from Evermore would definitely be "right where you left me" and "champagne problems". What are yours? Let me know if you do the tag!
