Mid-Year (ish) Reading Check-in

How is it almost August?! I can't believe I'm already late for a mid-year reading check-in! I stole these questions from AJ at Read All the Things!, but I think this tag is pretty widespread across the book blogosphere. I'm not sure who originally started it, but I'm glad they did, because this was really fun to do! All covers are linked to Goodreads.

BEST BOOK YOU'VE READ SO FAR IN 2024?

I have no words for how much I loved Starless. Actually, that's not true. I wrote some words about it here.

BEST SEQUEL YOU'VE READ SO FAR IN 2024?

This was between Forging Silver into Stars and Us Against You, but I went with Fredrik Backman, of course.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN'T READ BUT WANT TO?

This cozy fantasy sounds right up my alley! The Spellshop was released on July 9, 2024, so my library doesn't have it yet. I first heard about it on Forever Lost in Literature.

ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF 2024?

I love fairytale retellings, especially unusual ones, so I'm super excited for A Sorceress Comes to Call, which is a retelling of the Brothers Grimm's "Goose Girl"!

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT?

Gosh, I have so many titles for this one, but if we're not counting DNFs, I'd have to go with Court of Lions. I had high hopes for this sequel to Mirage and I was sorely disappointed by the lack of character development and absence of raised stakes.

BIGGEST SURPRISE?

Absolutely loved A Brief Theology of Periods! I think all women should read this book.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR?

Would have to be Alice Oseman! (If we're going with "new to me".) I haven't read Loveless yet, but I just got it from the library and I'm so excited to start it! (I almost chose Katherine Center for this question, but I already knew I liked her; I just hadn't read anything by her for several years before this month.)

FAVORITE CHARACTER?

I love Zariya from Jacqueline Carey's Starless! She's strong, fierce, and brave, and she calls everyone "darling".

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY?

When I wasn't cringing at the writing, I quite enjoyed Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer. It was a fluffy fantasy with a light smattering of violence and a heavy dose of romance.

FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION?

Ugh. I hate that I loved The Summer I Turned Pretty as much as I did. I almost put Andrew Davies' War and Peace instead; however, TSITP is more recent and I just finished Season 2, so I went with that. I'm kind of devastated that I'll have to wait until next summer for Season 3, because it means I'll have to read We'll Always Have Summer again and I'm not sure I'm up for that.

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU BOUGHT IN 2024?

I ordered The Otherworld so recently that I don't even have it yet! None of the other books I've bought this year are particularly pretty, though.

WHAT BOOK DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR?

Speaking of pretty books! I've seen so many bloggers raving about Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, so I need to read it! I'm saving it for the fall/winter.

And with that, my (very late) mid-year reading check-in is complete! Have you read any of these books? I'd love to hear your answers to these prompts!
