Welcome back to the Sunday Salon (hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz)! I've been joining the linkup on the last Sunday of every month to share both life news and bookish updates.

June News
1. I started a writer/author Instagram account this month! You can find me @karis.dehaven. Mostly I've just been posting silly reels about the writing life, but eventually I intend to use it as a platform to promote my books!
2. One of my dear friends is a theater reviewer, and she happened to have an extra ticket to see Shakespeare's A Tale of Cymbeline, so she asked if I wanted to come along (I did, of course). The production was outdoors and started at 8pm, which meant I got to bed around 11:30 (way past my bedtime), but it was worth it! I loved the experience. The actors were amazing. I knew next to nothing about Cymbeline going in, so I was a little discombobulated at the appearance of the (fake) severed head. Otherwise, though, I greatly enjoyed the show.

| We had to walk up this hill to get to the theater space! (There was a paved path, but it was still a big hill.) |
3. My husband and I went to see Supergirl yesterday. I wasn't expecting to love it, but I also wasn't expecting to be as disturbed as I was by the movie. Although there was very little gore or swearing, I left the theater feeling unsettled. I would give it a 6 out of 10; my husband rated it a 7.8 out of 10.
Just Finished Reading
On Tuesday, I finished the chaotic memoir Dirt by Bill Buford.
Also on Tuesday, I finished Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card. (I can't believe it took me so long to read it! What a great book!)
On Friday, I finished Better Than Revenge by Kasie West. So cute! So fun!
Currently Reading
I'm currently reading Shannon Messenger's Nightfall, which is the sixth book in the Keeper of the Lost Cities series. I also just started The Library of Lost and Found by Phaedra Patrick and 1776 by David McCullough.

Top Ten Tuesday: Summer 2026 TBR

I love to see live stage productions, but I don't think I've ever been to see any live stage productions of Shakespeare's works. I'd thought we might go see Supergirl, but I'll probably pass on it now and go for the new Toy Story instead.
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend enjoying live Shakespeare! If the actors are good, they can really bring his plays to life and make the meaning clear in a way that's hard to experience just reading them.
DeleteI hope you enjoy whichever movie you end up going to see! :)
That's good to hear! I feel like I read a little less than usual in June, but I still had a decent reading month.
ReplyDeleteIn highschool I saw a stage production of Hamlet and The Merchant of Venice. The later was a university student production while the former was a big stage production. I enjoyed them both.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your week, happy reading!
Oh fun! I've never seen The Merchant of Venice live. Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteCongrats on your author Instagram account! I am trying to remember if I read Enders Game…

Thank you!! I'm having fun with it :)
DeleteI listened to a review of Supergirl on NPR. There were two women and a man discussing it. They were all kind of meh on it but one of the women said that she felt the trafficking story line crossed a little into being exploitative. That really made me question whether I want to see it at all. Your review has me even less eager to see it.
ReplyDeleteI saw A Midsummer Night's Dream on the stage in college. I actually liked that play when I read it in school (I never liked anything I had to read for class, so that was a rarity), but I didn't think the play was ever going to end :-) My husband and I tried to see a play at a Shakespeare in the Park event (I don't remember which one), but we had never been to that park before and never did find the amphitheater!
I enjoyed The Library of Lost and Found. I hope you do too!
That's exactly how I felt about it!! Honestly, David Corenswet's few short appearances as Superman were the best parts of the movie in my opinion lol.
DeleteI don't love reading Shakespeare, but I really enjoy watching it! I'm sorry you were able to find the amphitheater–what a bummer!
I'm enjoying it so far!
That sounds like a great production! I don't actually know much about Cymbeline myself...
ReplyDeleteI remember finding Ender's Game really gripping; it's a shame that Orson Scott Card is deeply anti-gay.
It was fantastic! It had a lot of the same tropes as Romeo and Juliet (including the potion that induces a deathlike sleep), but turned them all on their head, which I found very interesting.
DeleteI'm glad you had fun at the theater! I saw a Shakespeare play in high school, but all the actors were fellow high schoolers, so it wasn't great.
ReplyDeleteI think it definitely takes a good director, too, to make sure the actors know what they're saying–if the actors don't understand what their lines mean, the audience won't either!
